Everyone uses Bicubic resizing religiously when they make DivX movies or any time they resize pictures in photo editing software.

I have suggested that it is best to use Bilinear to shrink images and Bicubic to enlarge them. In fact I believe it is a rule that shouldn't be broken. But then again there is mixed opinion even among experts on this matter. Whereas the help file of Adobe Photoshop just mentions that Bicubic is more exact method for resizing. In actual fact Bicubic is more precise, but only when it comes to enlarging. When it comes to shrinking its exactness can actually produces pixelation, because to shrink an image pixels must be discarded anyway.
The following shows examples demonstrating this effect. There are reasons you may prefer Bicubic shrinking methods though. Namely, if sharpness is absolutely vital and pixelation problems are less important.
The following is the effects of enlarging a small image using Bilinear Upsizing. Next demonstrates the effects of enlarging using Bicubic Upsizing. The following demonstrates the effects of shrinking using Bicubic Downsizing:.

Bilinear sharp Bicubic sharper Lanczos smooth Now, I stream a lot of BF4, and I downscale p to p and have always used lanczos, but from this list, it looks like that may not be the best idea, as I am going for sharpness, not smoothness. Now we must prepare for the impending Battle For Azeroth. Both in terms of the lore and the technical aspects of the game. Sadly Patch 8. Patch 8. All of the old resolution options have been removed. So comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. The Settings: A Precursor. On a standard desktop, this makes images and text nice and crisp to read. With Retina Displays now standard on virtually all Macs made within the last several years, I need to point out the most crucial thing of this entire guide.
Not a single Mac on the market has a GPU powerful enough to play games at native resolutions. This has become even more crucial in BFA with fullscreen mode now removed from the game. Neither of these Macs have GPUs anywhere near powerful enough to play games at these resolutions. The Settings: External User Tweaks. And as I stated in the section above, this resolution is probably way too high for your poor graphics card to handle. Running the game at native resolution and adjusting the resolution scaling lets you keep UI elements like your unit frames and action bars sharp while making the actual game world more or less pixelated.
In contrast, running the game in low resolution mode will make everything, including the action bars, slightly more pixelated. But not as overall drastically so as lowering the resolution scaling does. Personally I think running the game in low resolution mode looks and runs better on my personal Macbook Pro, but do whatever you think works best for you. Base Settings. The Settings: Explained. This lets you choose between running the game within a window on the desktop, or to fill up the screen while running in a borderless window.
Gamers with extremely high end gaming rigs like to crank this up as a form of Anti-Aliasing to help smooth out edges of textures and generally make the game look better, but this has by far the single biggest impact on the performance of the game.
As the in-game tool-tip says, it is a graphics filter used to smooth out jagged edges. In general, the severity of visible jagged edges changes drastically depending on the game and the graphics engine used to display it.
Describing each type of AA goes beyond the scope of this guide, but suffice it to say, MSAA is generally the best compromise between quality and performance. FXAA is a sort of lens filter that overlays the entire screen after the game has already been rendered, and acts as a post-render effect, blurring everything including the UI elements like action bars.
MSAA is added during the rendering of each frame, and only smooths out the edges of textures. The result is a more fluid image at all times. This slider is an overall preset function that collectively tries to adjust every setting at once.
Changes the sharpness of the in-game textures like flooring, player armor, NPC skins, etc. A filter used to enhance the sharpness of textures, as opposed to just the edges. Increases and decreases the point at which distant objects change from being flat decals to rendered, textured objects.
The higher the setting, the more the GPU has to render at once. This is essentially View Distance for grass. Old game consoles are great.
Not just because there are plenty of old games that are still worth playing, but because the simpler electronic designs of cartridge-based systems tend to be much more resistant to wear and tear than modern disc-based consoles, plenty of them are still around and in great working condition. But in fact, because the television has to take the low-resolution image and upscale it to display at the full HD resolution, resampling it as it enlarges, it will look more like this:.
So anything from the PlayStation 2 or earlier is going to have at least some of these effects, with older consoles having even more pronounced blurriness. The problem is exacerbated with the difference between analog and digital cables.
Of course, the graphics in these games were created with these limitations in mind. Most newer televisions can account for this in the image settings; you can set the aspect ratio to manual or original. Again, some slightly newer consoles can account for newer TVs. CRT televisions have fantastically fast image processing thanks to their analog setups, generally lowers than milliseconds—below the point where most players can even notice it. The all-digital setups on modern televisions and monitors are more complex, and even an expensive gaming monitor will have an input lag of around 8 milliseconds.
How to resize an image in Photoshop and keep best quality
More typically, televisions will have considerably higher display lag, especially when upscaling from analog video sources like old consoles. Fighting games especially measure response times precisely, sometimes in just one or two frames of animation. But it can be seriously distracting for some older video games. If you prefer the modern, pixel-perfect look, you have a few options. If you happen to have a newer gaming system with access to old titles via digital download, the experience on HDTVs is pretty great.
Recently some game companies have also been re-releasing collections of classic games on updated, all-digital hardware, like the SNES Classic. These look fantastic on modern displays as well, thanks to careful tuning from the manufacturer.
Another option is emulation. They use the original ROM files taken from cartridges and game discs. Older game systems are so low-power that even cheap devices like the Raspberry Pi can emulate their operating systems without breaking a sweat. Alternately, you can buy newer reverse-engineered versions of classic consoles that are designed to play the original game cartridges with modern HDTV outputs including the new very highly-regarded Super Nt from Analogue.

Most image viewing programs have a built-in feature to help you change the size of images. Here are our favorite image resizing tools for Windows.
Maybe you need to upload a smaller version of a photograph to Facebook they do it automatically and badly when you upload anyway or another social site. Or maybe you want just the right size image to include in a blog post or Word document. High resolution photos are more open to blowing up to larger sizes, but even they have their limits—blow up a photograph too much and things start to get grainy.
The image is crisp, and the details still present. Paint has been a staple of Windows since version 1. Paint gives you the option of resizing by percentage or by pixels. Note : As ofPaint has been added to the deprecated list of apps no longer being developed by Microsoft.
Instead, they are replacing Paint with Paint 3D. You can also drag an image from File Explorer onto an open PicPick window.
PicPick lets you resize by percentage or by pixels. It uses percentage by default, which is good for rough resizing. If you need to resize to specific dimensions, switch over to using pixels. For that, we turn to our next couple of tools. And there are lots of plugins available that extend its functionality. You can resize by specific dimensions pixels, centimeters, or inches or by percentage.
IrfanView uses dimensions by default, which is great for when you need images to be a specific size, though you can switch to percentages for rough resizing. IrfanView has a built-in batch tool if you have multiple images that you need to convert all at once.
The batch tool can be a little bit confusing to work with, since you can use it to apply just about any of the functions IrfanView includes. The next window has a lot of features and is a little bit of an eye sore. Back in the main Batch Conversion window, make note of the output directory. One of our favorites is BulkResizePhotosa free service that lets you resize, edit, crop, and compress images.
