Your boat will tell you how much outboard it needs. Every boat has a maximum number of people it can carry, a maximum load of equipment it can carry and a maximum horsepower rating.
The horsepower rating is based on the boat's "hull design speed. The NMMA plate contains important information which you should know, including the number of people the boat can carry and the horsepower rating of largest motor you should use.
Ask yourself how many people are usually with you when you go boating. Use a calculator, if there are several passengers, to multiply the top horsepower rating by 1. If the plate says a horsepower engine is the largest you should use, then: x 1. This adds ten percent to the horsepower and will make it easier for your boat to carry the load of several people more efficiently. Work the equation the other way if you boat by yourself.

Going faster than the theoretical hull speed is possible, but the wave moves under the transom so the boat has to plow through the water at an angle, bow up which then requires exponentially more power to move the vessel once theoretical hull speed is reached. This is the limit to displacement boat speed. A displacement boats theoretical hull speed is when the wave length is equal to the waterline length.
The important thing here is the length of the wave is relative to the length of the boat. The SL Ratio is a simple formula for calculating displacement boats speed which is typically 1.
Not all hulls are the same; depending on other factors like displacement and beam the boat may create a larger or smaller bow wave in proportion to its length. Heavier displacement vessels will have difficulty getting over 1. This formula applied to planing boats only and only takes into account the displacement of the hull, ignoring length. This may seem odd but as opposed to a displacement hull, the most important factor in determining speed is displacement. These two characteristics apply to the planing hull.

Catamaran hull speed, trimaran hull speed and light displacement hull speed may be higher. The results and the chart plot are based on an SL Ratio of 1. Note that this number only applies to displacement hulls. Hull speed, as calculated here, is important as it is a building block to attaining figures like, what power is required and ultimately calculating what propeller may be optimum for a particular boat.
The chart displays speed at different percentages of theoretical hull speed. Desired speed is populated from the hull speed or Gerr DL Ratio forms. This is the maximum speed you require and should be less than the calculated hull speed. For a displacement hull it is pointless to try go beyond hull speed. See SL Ratio for more information on how hull speed is derived.
The results show the estimated required power at the shaft. Note that engines are rated differently for inboard diesels. Enter both values LWL and Desired speed. These are used in Wymans formula to calculate estimated power required for the vessel. This is the maximum speed you require. Note, there are other factors, such as safety, not covered by this calculation that would limit desired speed.According to federal law, motorized boats that are less than 20 feet in length must have a capacity plate in the steering or helm area.
Here you also find the maximum weight and size of engine. Understand that the capacity recommendations for your boat are meant for boat operation in good weather conditions. The boat capacity plate must be permanently displayed in view of the operator when the boat is underway.
Note: Coast Guard statistics indicate that capsizing is a leading cause of boating-related deaths. Prevent your boat from capsizing by understanding the recommendations on the capacity plate. Some capacity plates will tell you the maximum number of people that can safely be carried on your boat.

If I use the transom width of 48" on the bottom with tiller steer it shows I can only run a 12hp motor, if I use the 6' top the factor shows 27hp.
Seems lind of ironic that I'm able to run an 85hp inboard jet with a low center of gravity that handles like it's on rails. What are the sources for this capacity limit formula? I don't remember reading it in the US Coast Guard's boat builders handbook. They do go into specifics on handling and power capacity limits that way. It makes a difference between max rating of 40 H.

My own observations have borne this out over the years and I can add this: When powerboaters talk about their boats, they eventually turn to the topic of horsepower.
This is hardly surprising, since engine output directly affects performance. Because a quick look at the term and topic of horsepower can provide you with some interesting information—or at least a little trivia with which you can impress your boating pals. First, the basics, and I promise to keep this part simple. For our purposes, the term horsepower emanates from James Watt, who is credited with the first truly successful steam engine.
Being an entrepreneur, he of course wanted to promote his invention by comparing it to the most popular motive power of the day, the horse. After hours of observation and arcane calculations, Watt determined that a horse could turn a mill wheel times in an hour, or 2. Well, good for Watt, but what does that have to do with your Cats? Actually, quite a lot. Other kinds of horsepower include electric, boiler, and hydraulic.
That would seem to end the subject right there except for one thing: There are lots of different ways of measuring horsepower—what engineers call engine power test codes. Codes address how an engine is rated and under what conditions—things like air temperature, humidity, and fuel temperature. Cool air is denser and allows more fuel to be added and thus more horsepower to be produced.
Humid air contains more moisture, and that means more oxygen, a key component of combustion. And cool fuel is denser than hot fuel, so more of it can be added to the combustion chambers. Today most engineers rely on a more sophisticated device called a dynamometer, but regardless, the obvious drawback to mounting a device to the crankshaft is that it does not account for frictional losses that necessarily occur in a transmission, which can run as high as 15 percent.
Even so, look through marine engine product literature and spec sheets, and you will still find engines rated in brake horsepower or bhp. A better method to measure horsepower is by attaching the measuring device to the output flange of the transmission, which obviously accounts for frictional losses from the transmission and so paints a more accurate picture of what an engine is actually delivering in the real world. But for a boat, the most accurate horsepower measurement is the one taken at the propeller because it accounts for the frictional losses created by shaft logs, strut bearings, and such—accurate but impractical for anything but complete engine-drive packages like stern drives and outboards.
Metric horsepower is also measured at the transmission output shaft but under slightly different conditions. Or to put it in more real-world terms, if you run your boat in the summertime in Florida, it will not perform as well as it does in the fall up north. In addition, there must be a maximum horsepower shown for the engine on outboard boats. But there are likely to hold several surprises for boat owners and buyers. Most boaters myself included believed that a maximum capacity, such as " Four Persons or pounds", is the point beyond which a boat is likely to become unstable or will capsize.
It seems obvious that the maximum horsepower rating is to keep us from speeding out of control with an oversized engine and, since these ratings are mandated by the U.
Coast Guard, it's a logical assumption that these capacities are the result of their testing. First, the maximum capacity is actually the number of people or their total weight that the boat will safely support if it is swamped. Second, the horsepower rating has nothing to do with speed. That's the whole reason for the flotation standard and why we say how many people can be on board. Horsepower only has to do with engine weight. If you put too big an engine on a boat, you throw the flotation off.
Last, the manufacturers set the Coast Guard capacity maximum, which they reach using an accepted formula, and they also determine the horsepower since they know how much engine weight will still allow their boat to float level.
It should be noted that the NMMA is much tougher on calculating weight maximums, as well as increasing the size of boats requiring flotation from the Federal standard of 20 feet up to 26 feet. The NMMA also has a test where the driver must crank the wheel degrees in a split second.
If the boat is not capable of such a turn through 90 degrees at full throttle without the driver losing control, then the NMMA requires a "Maneuvering Speed" placard be posted warning that sudden turns may cause a loss of control above a certain speed.
